Knee Deep
I know you think you know me,
though I'm certain you have not a clue.
That reflection you see - was once me,
for I was once you.
The emptiness inside your chest,
is a void you can't seem to fill.
When the day is done - you are down to one,
though people surround you still.
It's like standing knee deep in a river,
feeling as if you are dying of thirst.
An empty home - or being alone,
you start to question what is worse.
As you wonder how you got here,
your life before you begin to recall.
Yet that was then - when you had friends,
before you hid behind the wall.
I know exactly what you are feeling,
a familiar look I recognize.
You just exist - avoiding what you miss,
leaving you emotionally paralyzed.
You attempt to stay busy,
putting yourself in every one's demand.
Hiding the hole - that consumes your soul,
while struggling to understand.
Truth is it's very simple,
though the answer is not an easy task.
To let someone in - you have to begin,
living out from behind the mask.
People need people,
though having boundary lines is smart.
To heal the soul - that finds you whole,
you have to first open your heart.
